SOFTBALL PRESIDENT SPEAKS OUT
Says Elimination of
2012 Olympic Softball Fades Dreams of Young Female Athletes
Interviewed at his office
in the International Softball Federation’s (ISF) world
headquarters in Plant City, Florida, Don Porter, President of
the sport’s governing body, expressed his severe disappointment
in last week’s developments in Torino. The International
Olympic Committee (IOC) held its 118th Session,
during which time support went against softball, 47-43 (plus two
abstentions), to have a re-vote on the sport’s status for the
2012 Olympics. At last July’s IOC Session in Singapore, a tie
vote (52-52, with one abstention) had resulted in softball being
taken off the programme of the Games to be held in London just
over six years from now.
Mr. Porter indicated that
the decision was inevitable, bearing the political furor at last
week’s Session, held just prior to the start of the Winter
Olympic Games currently taking place there. Politics being a
factor come as no surprise, and one leading news source (the
French paper L’Equipe, Feb. 10) has already inferred that this
was not a sport decision, but a political move.
Mr. Porter was
particularly dismayed with a strong letter he received prior to
the Session from FIFA [international football (soccer)]
President Joseph Blatter that said that he did not support the
reconsideration of softball because it would embarrass the IOC
to reconsider an issue that was decided some seven months ago in
Singapore.
“The number one thing
here is the girls. The young athletes who have been playing
softball, working toward their dream of playing in the
Olympics. It’s that easy,” the ISF President said. “That’s all
that the decision should have been based on – not whether it
would make someone look good or bad.”
He asked, “Where does a
sport have the right to effectively decide the future of another
sport? Would it be that more television dollars would be
available with only 26 sports (in 2012 in London)? Although,
it’s supposed that soccer (football) doesn’t really need more
dollars.”
The ISF President also
cited several other concerns, including the ongoing perceived
tie to baseball, which continues to confuse IOC Members. He
further said, “The IOC still has never told our sport what its
weaknesses were, other than it was not a ‘global’ sport, which
according to the IOC’s own Evaluation Report used in Singapore,
is not the case because of facts and figures that say
otherwise.”
Even London2012 wanted to
have softball, if the IOC gave the go-ahead, and even when the
reconsideration was rejected, according to published media
reports, that organizing committee said they would build a
softball venue there anyway.
“The end result is that
thousands and thousands of young female athletes effectively
have their Olympic dreams fading away,” Mr. Porter said, “not to
mention the potential future impact they (voting IOC Members)
have made on the sport in its ongoing development activities in
the likes of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Pacific Island
countries, as well as potentially jeopardizing softball’s status
in multisport games, such as the Pan American, Asian,
All-Africa, World University Games, and others.”
The ISF is the world
governing body of the sport as recognized by the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) and the General Association of
International Sports Federations (GAISF). Softball (women's
fast pitch) made its Olympic debut at the 1996 Games in
Atlanta. There are 127 affiliated countries in the ISF and
millions of participants in the sport worldwide.

ISF PRESIDENT EXPRESSES CONCERN AND
SUPPORT FOR SOFTBALL IN IRAQ
Travels Could Take Sport’s Leader to
Rebuilding Country; Equipment Could Be Sent Soon
Reacting to a report published recently
in Baghdad, Lebanon, and Qatar, International Softball Federation (ISF)
President Don Porter took time out during his current Asia trip to
issue comments on the state of his sport in Iraq.
“The ISF is concerned about the lack of
attention and support for women’s sports in Iraq, while applauding
those that are trying to play, like Iran and other Muslim states,”
Mr. Porter said from his hotel in Seoul, Korea. “We want softball
to be played in those countries and we intend to help them,
including a personal visit such as I am doing currently in Asia, to
assess first-hand what is needed in the way of support and help.”
He pointed out that the first women’s
softball championship in Iran was held two months ago.
The ISF President went on to add that
softball is a world sport, with the national governing body for
softball in 126 countries being members of the ISF. “With the
support of the Iraq Olympic Committee, we would be glad to work with
individuals in Iraq to make a national governing body for softball
there our 127th member and get our sport played and
enjoyed by boys, girls, men, and women in that country.”
Mr. Porter indicated that the world
governing body for softball has sent equipment valued at over $900
thousand (USD) to over 60 countries over the last two-plus years,
and would be willing to provide “starter kits” to Iraq to fuel the
development of the sport there. Starter kits shipped out by the
ISF’s Development Department consist of: 12 gloves, six bats, two
equipment bags, 24 balls, four batting helmets, a set of catching
gear, and a set of bases.
The report that spurred the ISF
President’s comments can be seen at each of the following:

Korea on his current trip, which began on May 11. He will return to
the ISF’s world headquarters in Plant City, Florida, from the Asia
trip.

SOFTBALL ADDED TO
WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Sport Continues to Display Universality
with Presence in Another Multisport Games Event
March
17, 2005 - Women’s fast
pitch softball will be played at the 2007 World University Games in
Bangkok. George Killian, President of the International University
Sports Federation (FISU) informed International Softball Federation
(ISF) President Don Porter yesterday that the sport will make its
debut appearance at the event in two years in Thailand.
Held every two years, the World
University Games are one of the largest multisport games next to the
Olympics, with over 170 countries participating.
“I was very much elated at and
appreciative of FISU’s confidence in our sport to place it on the
program of this most prestigious and important international event,”
Mr. Porter said.
Softball concluded a very successful
World University Championship last October at the ISF’s world
headquarters and training complex in Plant City, Florida. The USA
team edged Chinese Taipei, 1-0, for the gold medal, with Japan
winning the bronze. Immediately following the event, FISU awarded a
second World University Championship to softball, to be played next
year in Tainan City, Taiwan.
Softball – in many cases both men’s and
women’s – is already on the program of more than a dozen multisport
games, including the: All-Africa Games, Arafura Games, Asian Games,
Bolivarian Games, Central American Games, Central American &
Caribbean Games, Maccabiah Games, Micronesian Games, Mindanao Games,
Pan American Games, South American Games, South East Asian Games,
South Pacific Games, World Firefighters Games, and World Masters
Games.
Also, the 1st Men’s
Commonwealth Softball Championship is scheduled to be played in
January of 2006 in Melbourne, Australia, as the ISF works toward
getting men’s and women’s softball added to the program of the
Commonwealth Games.
The ISF is the world governing body of
the sport as recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
and the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF).
Softball (women's fast pitch) made its Olympic debut at the 1996

Harlem Diamonds Update
2005 TOURING SCHEDULE TAKING SHAPE
Early bookings
include prominent softball locations
February 9, 2005 -
The Harlem Diamonds offered an early sneak peek today at
their schedule for the inaugural 2005 season, a tour which includes
several high-profile softball facilities. The team is more than a month
away from finalizing the complete schedule.
“We really just started
booking the games a few weeks ago and we are thrilled to have already
scheduled several locations that hosted US Olympic Women’s Softball team
last year,” said Harlem Diamonds president and general manager Dale
Moss, Those locations include Currie Stadium in Midland, Michigan (July
2) and the Sacramento Softball Complex in Sacramento, California
(September 2).
The Harlem Diamonds are
also booked into some of the best of the new facilities and some
beautiful older parks. The Diamonds will play in one of the top modern
softball centers performing at the Virginia Sports Complex outside of
Richmond, Virginia (July 11). The classic ballpark is best represented
by historic Patriots Park in Allentown, PA (July 10) with its beautiful
manicured field, flowered grounds, and tree-shaded bleachers.
Speaking of classics,
the classic movie about women on the diamond, A League of Their Own,
was a fictional account of the exploits of a real-life team, the
Rockford Peaches. The Harlem Diamonds will make a journey to play in
the Peaches’ home of Rockford, Illinois (June 24). If you watch the
movie closely, you see that black women were excluded from the women’s
league. Several top African-American women players including Toni Stone
and Mamie “Peanut” Johnson played instead in the men’s Negro Leagues and
their contributions are recognized in Kansas City’s Negro Leagues
Baseball Museum. The Harlem Diamonds’ black women players are scheduled
to perform (June 18) at the historic Kansas City institution.
The team will even take
its softball show to the baseball field, utilizing Class AA Tulsa
Drillers stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma for an event (July 23).
The Harlem Diamonds are
a spin-off of basketball’s Harlem Ambassadors which is the largest
provider of entertainment to the United States military worldwide,
having performed at over 110 different bases. “We are very pleased that
the Harlem Diamonds will also be performing for our men and women in
uniform,” said Dale Moss. The team is scheduled at Keesler Air Force
Base in Mississippi (July 19) and Naval Support Base Mid-South in
Tennessee (July 21).
“We’re pleased with how
the schedule is coming together with softball organizations, community
not-for-profit groups, and the military all getting on board,” said Dale
Moss. For more information about the Harlem Diamonds fundraising
programs, go to the website at
www.harlemambassadors.com or
call 970-472-1000. |

MANASSAS, VIRGINIA USA - If early
registrations are an indicator, the 4th ISF Senior World Cup will
include a record number of teams. As of today, seven (7) senior men's
teams have already entered and dozens of new teams have inquired about
the event. The tournament has grown every year and 2005 should be no
exception.
In response to the women's request at the Senior Summit, we will add
divisions for 40+ and 45+ for them this year. This should help keep more
women participating in our sport and not have to drop out until they are
50.
The tournament is scheduled for June 17-19 at Manassas. Entry forms can
be copied from the ISSA website. The team roster is not due until the
tournament. |

ANDERSON BAT COMPANY JOINS ISF BAT
CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
Manufacturer Is Ninth Participating
Company
Anderson Bat Company is the
International Softball Federation’s (ISF) newest partner in the
world governing body’s bat certification program. The Placentia,
California-based company joins eight other manufacturers in a
collaboration with the ISF that is the only way to have their bats
allowed to be used in competitions such as the Olympics, world
championships, world cups, and qualifying tournaments, among others.
The agreement requires Anderson Bat
Company – like the other participating manufacturers – to have their
bats laboratory-tested first before being submitted to the ISF, to
show that they meet with the current bat standard, set by the
Playing Rules Commission. Those bats that pass testing are then
listed on the Equipment Standards page on the ISF website (www.internationalsoftball.com)
and from that point on, allowed to be used in the various worldwide
competitions.
Anderson Bat Company will be providing
softball equipment to be used for worldwide distribution as part of
the ISF development department’s ongoing efforts to grow the game in
areas where the sport is still in the building stage. Along with
the use of their bats in the various tournaments, the equipment VIK
(value-in-kind) provision also gives Anderson – like the others
currently participating – an opportunity for global exposure for
their brand.
The ISF commits approximately one-third
of its annual budget to development and has provided over (USD)760
thousand dollars worth of softball equipment globally over the last
two years.
“We are ecstatic about our partnership
with ISF and look forward to building future relations with ISF,”
said Ed McIntosh, Anderson Bat Company Director of Sales and
Marketing. “We appreciate the opportunity that this relationship
offers us.”
The above-mentioned page on the ISF
website, which also bears the company logos of the participating
manufacturers, gives athletes, coaches, and umpires preparing to go
to an ISF competition a resource to consult, to ensure that they’ll
know what can (and cannot) be used at the event they’re headed to.
Players who bring a bat to an ISF competition that is not on the
approved list – meaning a successful test result has not been
submitted for it or it’s made by a manufacturer that does not
participate in the ISF’s bat certification program – will have their
bat(s) taken away until the conclusion of the event.

HARLEM DIAMONDS SIGN MICHIGAN STAR
Pitcher
Marissa Young signs
with touring show softball team
The
Harlem Diamonds touring show softball team announced the signing of its
first player today, pitcher Marissa Young from the University of
Michigan. Young signed for the 2005 Harlem Diamonds season, plus an
option for 2006. "After finishing my season in the National Pro
Fastpitch League, I am blessed to continue my career with the Harlem
Diamonds,” said Young.
“We
are thrilled to have Marissa Young as the first player on board with the
Harlem Diamonds,” said Dale Moss, the team’s President and General
Manager. “Marissa is the quality pitcher we were looking to build our
team around,” he said, adding that “even more importantly she is a
quality person.”
Originally from Santa Ana, California, Young was a three-time
All-American at Michigan compiling 88 wins and 927 strikeouts during her
college career. She led the Wolverines twice to appearances in the
College World Series in 2001 and 2002. In 2002 she was the Big Ten
Pitcher of the Year and in 2003 she was named Big Ten Player of the
Year. A complete player, Young has also played first base throughout
her softball career and batted .286 in her four seasons at Michigan. In
2004 Young played for the Texas Thunder in the National Pro Fastpitch
circuit. Despite limited appearances, she posted the fourth-best ERA in
the league at 1.14.
Like the Harlem Ambassadors, the Harlem Diamonds’ games will benefit
community youth and social service organizations. The Harlem Diamonds
team will field a squad of only five women, challenging male and coed
community all-star squads. “I am most excited that the touring show
will provide me with the one of a kind opportunity to challenge male
counterparts and have more intimate interaction with the youth and
organizations we will perform for, "Young observed.
The Harlem Diamonds will
begin play Memorial Day 2005 and will perform between 45 and 60 events
throughout the summer months. The team is owned by Harlem Ambassadors,
Inc., a Fort Collins, Colorado-based producer of show basketball
events. The Harlem Ambassadors are in their seventh season of play, and
have two touring teams playing more than 200 events annually. The team
uniquely features women players starring for each of the two teams. The
Harlem Ambassadors are also the largest provider of entertainment
services to the United States military worldwide. |

PLAN AHEAD.........The 2004 ISF Senior World
Cup will be held at Manassas, VA on June 18-20 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). In
October RB Thomas, Jr., ISF Director of Senior Softball had the opportunity to make a
presentation to the delegates to the ISF World Congress in Nanjing, China on the
development of slow pitch softball for seniors (adults 50 and older) and invited the 124
member countries to participate in this year's World Cup. Several countries voiced
their intent to try to get a team entered this year. A team from Japan is presently
making their travel arrangements and we anticipate several other international teams to
enter. Please pass the word to other senior teams in your area and help us to
continue to grow this international event. The entry form is posted on the ISSA
website.
Last year Manassas, VA was called the SENIOR SOFTBALL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD in one National
magazine. Having hosted nine (9) ISSA World Championships and two (2) ISF Senior
World Cups the historic "town" is becoming known for senior softball along with
its Civil War battles. This year will mark the 10th ISSA World Championships and we
hope to make it a special event for the senior players and their families and friends.
Last year we had 90 senior teams participating....a lot of teams for a single
weekend. This year with your help we would like to top the 100 mark as we celebrate
the 10th anniversary. Our tournament grows by recommendations from previous
participants who have found it desirable and a well run senior tournament. You can help by
telling other teams in your area that have not experienced an ISSA event that they should
consider this one in 2004. The tournament will be held on the same third weekend in
August, the 20th to 22nd (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). !
Together, we can make this a great one. The entry form is posted on the website.
Both tournaments will be open to all senior teams and plans are to include divisions of
play for all age classifications for men and women. The men's divisions will include
four skill level divisions (Major+, Major, AAA and AA) in each age classification. |

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - The ASA National Annual Meeting was held last week in

The players on a team roster must come from the home state and adjoining states.
The "home state" is where most of the players on the roster reside.
Also next year ASA will have four classifications of play in the 50, 55, 60 and 65
divisions - Major Plus, Major, AAA and AA. The home run limit for each
classification will be Major Plus (6 and then one-up), Major (6), AAA (3) and AA (1).
The ASA National Senior Tournament will be held on Labor Day Weekend at Salem,
Oregon in both 2004 and 2005.
SENIOR SUMMIT - The upcoming Senior Summit will be held at Winter Haven,
